What are ceramides?
Ceramides are small lipid molecules and substances specific to the body, which are found in the upper layer of our skin, in the epidermis, where the skin cells are surrounded. They represent up to 50% of the skin's epidermis and, together with other components (cholesterol and fatty acids), form the skin barrier (epidermis or stratum corneum). Ceramides play a binding role in the skin. They hold skin cells together and thus help keep the skin smooth, soft and taut. Above all, they prevent water loss and protect the skin from external influences.
As we age, the amount of ceramides in the skin begins to decrease*, and in addition to age, the amount is further affected by certain external factors, for example, dry and cold air, UV radiation, inadequate care, etc., which damages the epidermis. While the restoration of the latter is quite fast in young skin, it takes much longer in aged skin. Due to the lack of ceramides (or one of the components of the skin barrier), the skin loses moisture and becomes dry, which also causes many other problems (flaky, red, damaged skin). Furthermore, the skin barrier loses effectiveness in protecting against external influences (environmental pollutants, infections, allergens...).
Adding ceramides with nutritional supplements stimulates the skin's own ceramide production, increases the number of ceramides in the skin, helps restore the skin barrier, slows evaporation and improves skin hydration and elasticity.
